German-Style Spring Festival Features Big Beers, Music & More
It’s such as fun event that one is not enough. So in May there is “Little Oktoberfest.” It is called Maifest and in 2021 it takes place on May 22 and on Memorial Day Weekend, May 29 and 30.
What is Maifest, you ask? Well, other than being an excuse to party in May like it’s Oktoberfest, it’s a similar festival involving big beers with people dressed in barmaid outfits and lederhosen. The big drink at this event – other than big beers and here there are traditional German Springfest beers known as Mailbock – is the Maibowle, a champagne-style punch.
There are also bands, German food (bratwursts, homemade sauerkraut, pretzels, and apple strudel) , games that include a stein-holding and log-sawing contests and a festival Maypole adorned with colorful ribbons. Those who go dressed in traditional German attire receive a free Warsteiner gift.
Maifest takes place at the Big Bear Convention Center from 1-10 p.m.
Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors (62+), and $5 for kids (3 to 12 years of age). Preferred seating is available for $18, which includes reserved seating and cocktail service. A link to buy tickets is available on the Big Bear Events page.
The organizers of Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest came up with the idea after they learned about numerous celebrations that occur every spring throughout Germany called Maifest. These traditional German festivals date back to the 18th century when villagers and townspeople celebrated the end of winter and welcomed the arrival of springtime.

There is a complimentary “Take Home” shuttle available both Saturday and Sunday from the venue, door-to-door within the Big Bear Valley. It runs from 7-11:30 p.m.
