One of the top coastal destinations for travelers in California, Hearst Castle, is re-opening to visitors on Wednesday, May 11.

The former home of media tycoon William Randolph Hearst, high on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean in San Simeon (Central California), was closed during the pandemic and then also when rains washed away the road from the parking lot and visitor’s center the house.

You park below and take a bus up the hill to the castle. Wonder if the ride is still narrated by Alex Trebek?

At any rate, the rates to visit the house are reduced a bit, with the cost for the lowest ticket being $30. There are several tours offered at the castle and, of course, don’t forget to tip your guide!

Reservations are currently being taken on-line at the Hearst Castle website and are highly recommended, as this is a very popular tourist attraction. This is especially true in the summer months.  You can also call this number: 1-800-444-4445.

Be sure and have a mask with you as you may be asked to wear it, especially on the buses. The castle is operated by the California State Parks and adhere to the latest CDC guidelines.

Most people take the tour that includes the main house – get a load of that huge fireplace! – that goes by its famous outdoor Neptune Pool that looks like something you would see in ancient Rome and along the perfectly manicured gardens.

After the tour, you have as long as you want to stay at the top, walk the grounds and explore on your own.  Plan for at least three hours for the full experience.

Afterward, cross Pacific Coast Highway and do some wine tasting at the Hearst Winery!

Hearst started to build his estate on a ranchland in 1919. He called the estate “La Cuesta Encantada” – Spanish for The Enchanted Hill.

By 1947, the hilltop included a twin-towered main building, three sumptuous guesthouses, and 127 acres of terraced gardens, fountains, and pools.
