But the effects of the pandemic will be felt for those seeking a warm and dry place to have drinks on NYE, for some standard bars – O’Lunney’s, Times Square Pub, Heartland Brewery, Planet Hollywood, TGI Fridays and Ruby Tuesdays among them – have closed.
Plus, at least two bars that have moved into the vacant locations are dark on NYE, with management citing the fact that street closures and huge crowds make it for a long and difficult night for employees.
This means fewer bars are open in Times Square and those that are have long since sold out for their New Year’s Eve parties. Even if you wanted to go it would cost you; some are getting $5,500 and even Applebee’s sold out both locations at $600.
So if you go to Times Square for New Year’s Eve, you’re going to be outside. And you may get wet, for the weather forecast calls for a 60% chance of rain. The good news is that the temperature will be will above freezing at a predicted 48 degrees.
“We are usually selling tickets up to 4 p.m., on New Year’s Eve,” Applebee’s owner Zane Tankel told the New York Post. “We have never sold out this early and I think it’s because there are a lot of places that are not hosting parties this year.”
By the way, you do not need tickets to go to Times Square on New Year’s Eve. It is a free event open to the public with space available on a first-come, first-serve basis. What you do need is a plan and here is a guide to Times Square for New Year’s Eve.
