Neil Giraldo has been tuned into music since he took up the piano at age 12. And now he is tuned into bourbon.
The Rock ‘n Roll Hall of fame music producer and husband of Pat Benatar has created the appropriately named Three Chord Bourbon, a lineup of bourbons, whiskeys and a rye that is sure to be a hit with bourbon lovers.
Three Chord Bourbon is acoustic, not heavy metal. Subtle, not blow out your ears. Sipping, not slamming as if you’re in the Kentucky Derby infield. Owner’s box stuff.
It certainly struck a chord with me as I experienced it – along with Giraldo himself and the passionate guitar playing and singing of Harlis Sweetwater, whose appearance with a worn baseball cap and lengthy beard that made him look as if he were in ZZ Top – during a special media event at an upscale wine and spirits store in La Jolla, CA, Keg & Bottle.
My favorite turned out to be called Harmony, a whiskey rye which is a blend of young Kentucky rye and more refined, deeper flavors of older Indiana rye. It’s as smooth as a sax, as satisfying as a Willie Nelson song. The spirts are described as having a “slight burn” and it comes a moment after the sip, almost like an encore song after a band’s show. I can also tell you Three Cord Bourbon makes for a helluva good Old Fashioned.

There are five varieties of Three Chord, including a Tennessee whiskey which is not to be confused with Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” tho that would make for a nice accompanying song when sipping, and three limited production products. The retail price starts at just $30 a bottle and goes to about $45.
Giraldo produced Benatar’s mega hits “Love Is a Battlefield” and “We Belong.” He has performed on every Benatar album and produced all but two of them. He was inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, along with Benatar.
He came up with the idea by doing, well, drinking bourbon, with friends. In his music studio. And now he’s sharing that experience with others.
