A common question people not familiar with an area ask is: how much should I tip?
This is of particular interest for those attending the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. You can expect prices to go up during the Olympics but you don’t want to be ripped off like just because you’re a tourist when it comes to tipping.
So here’s a few big tips about tipping in Paris for the Olympics.
• Most restaurants already add an extra 15% to your bill. This is called the “service charge” and it legally mandaded by the government. In other words, it’s a tip. It is customary to add about 5% extra to it to be sure the server gets his or her fair share. This is called pourboire in French.
• Pro’s Tip: Check the items on your bill. Look for that 15%. Do not be intimated if the server hovers over you while you are surveying the tab. Remember, you are the one sitting down.
• Many restaurants and bar now use the handheld Toast payment stystem. This is worldwide and not just in Paris. They include options for 10, 15, 20, 25% tips (or more) as well as Custom Tip. Hit that “Custom Tip” button, unless you want to leave the server a large tip. And that is fine, as long as he or she earned it.
• Check your bar tab, too.
• Pay in cash. That way, you can just leave your money and, well, leave. Pro’s Tip: The best exchange rate for foreign currency are ATM machines at banks. Foreign exchange offices – particulary those at an airport or train station – do not offer as good exchange rates as the ATMs.
