The day after the night before can always be a little rough, especially when that night is New Year’s Eve.
That’s why New Year’s Day is the ulimate time for the hair-of-the-dog cocktail, making it the perfect time to be declared as National Bloody Mary Day. And yes, there is such a thing. In San Diego, there are several bars and restaurant-bars that specialize in Bloody Mary’s, and here is a rundown of where to get them on New Year’s Day.
Downtown at barleymash, the Spicy Michelada reigns supreme. This fiery, flavorful concoction ($13) is ideal for pairing with it’s popular big, hearty breakfast.
Just down Fifth Ave., Hasta Mañana Cantina has Micheladas on Tap that features San Diego craft beers Harland Hazy and Alesmith.
At the beach, Sandbar Sportsbar & Grill in Mission Beach has an over-the-top Big Ass Bloody made with vodka, a house blend Bloody Mary mix with clamato and a skewer of “goodies” ($18). Miss B’s Coconut Club has a House Jerk Bloody Mary combining island-inspired spices and a rich, savory flavor, this drink is perfect for those who like a little extra kick in their cocktail. In PB, Duck Dive has the Dive Bloody with Absolut, green tabasco, fresh squeezed lemon juice, house made bloody mix, bacon, celery, and blue cheese stuffed olives. Duck Dive also offers a Bloody Maria, with Olmeca-Altos Reposado, mezcal, Worcestershire, lemon, Cholula, and house made bloody mix in a Tajin-rimmed glass. Both are $14.
For a more refined experience, George’s at the Cove has a Spicy Bloody Mary ($18) with a view overlooking La Jolla Cove.
In Little Italy, Coco Maya has a tropical-inspired Bloody Mary with evodka, tequila or mezcal, combined with house bloody mary that includes with dried chiles, achiote, and scotch bonnet.
All over San Diego, Breakfast Republic also serves Bloody Marys.
