Slovenia, known for its rich natural beauty and outdoor recreation, also has a lot of cultural sites. In fact, here are 12 places and traditions on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.The country also participates in several other UNESCO programs.

1.  Škocjan Caves and the Magical Underground World
The Škocjan Caves feature the largest underground canyon in Europe, with dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and rock formations shaped by the karst river. Visitors can explore several kilometers of trails, including over 500 steps and bridges that reveal 26 waterfalls, vast chambers, and stalactites up to 15 meters tall. The caves lie within a protected regional park, offering additional educational and biking trails through its rich natural and cultural landscape.

2.The Most Well-Preserved Remnants of Primeval Beech Forests
The areas of primal beech forests in the Carpathian Mountains and other European regions that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List represent the most well-preserved remnants of beech forests, which have played a crucial role in the development and spread of beech ecosystems in Europe since the last glacial period, 12,000 years ago. In Slovenia, these ancient beech forests also thrive in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.earning their place on the UNESCO list due to their remarkable state of preservation. Both reserves are part of the protected Natura 2000 network.

3. Idrija and Its Mercury Heritage
Idrija and the Spanish town of Almadén are custodians of one of the world’s most important mercury mining legacies. Anthony’s Underground Mining Tunnel, dating back to the 1500s, is considered one of the oldest mine entrances in Europe and is open for guided tours that showcase traditional mining methods. And don’t be surprised—there’s even a friendly mine dwarf waiting to greet younger visitors. Many of Idrija’s attractions are connected to its mining heritage and the daily lives of former mining families—from the remarkable technical exhibits at Gewerkenegg Castle to the town’s proud tradition of handmade lace making.

4. The Ljubljana Pile-Dwellers and the Oldest Wheel in the World
Slovenia is one of the countries preserving the protected world heritage of the prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps. In the Ljubljana Marshes, around 40 sites with pile-dwelling remains have been discovered, with nine piles in two groups included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The most remarkable discovery is a 5,200-year-old wooden wheel with an axle, considered the oldest of its kind in the world. Artifacts related to the pile-dwelling culture are exhibited in various museums, and the Ljubljana Marshes Landscape Park invites visitors to explore the unique natural features of this ancient wetland near the capital.

5.Works by Jože Plečnik in Ljubljana – Human-Centered Urban Design
The architect Jože Plečnik left a profound mark on Slovenia’s capital. His architectural masterpieces, which give the city its distinctive character and skyline, have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The selected works of outstanding universal value include landmarks along both the land and water axes—such as the embankments of the Ljubljanica River, from the Trnovo Promenade to the Sluice Gate, with highlights including the Central Market, Triple Bridge, National and University Library, and the Križanke Open-Air Theatre.

Also included on the UNESCO list are the Roman Wall archaeological park, restored according to Plečnik’s plans, the Žale Cemetery, and the Churches of St. Michael in Črna Vas and St. Francis of Assisi in Ljubljana’s Šiška district.

6. Inside the World of Bees and Beekeepers

Beekeeping is a deeply rooted tradition in Slovenia, with over 12,000 active beekeepers and a strong cultural emphasis on the importance of bees for biodiversity and human survival. Slovenia also initiated World Bee Day, celebrated every May 20 since 2018. Beyond honey production, Slovenian beekeeping embraces cultural heritage, including folk art on beehive panels, health practices, and educational traditions such as the traditional Slovenian breakfast—served in kindergartens and schools on the third Friday of November—which, of course, includes honey.

7. The Elegant Tradition of Lipizzan Horse Breeding
Lipica Stud Farm, one of Europe’s oldest continuously operating stud farms, has been breeding elegant white Lipizzan horses for more than 440 years. This tradition is an important cultural heritage shared by Slovenia and seven other countries, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Lipizzan horses hold deep symbolic significance, celebrated through oral traditions and folk songs that reflect the strong bond between humans and horses. As the birthplace of the Lipizzan breed, Lipica is a major Slovenian attraction, known for its horse breeding legacy, architectural heritage, and cultural landscape.

8. Škofja Loka Passion Play
The oldest Slovenian play, dating back to the Baroque era, is reenacted every six years in the medieval town center of Škofja Loka. Featuring rich costumes, elaborate scenery, and a cast of over 900 local actors, this historic performance draws many visitors. The Škofja Loka Passion Play is recognized on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

9. Door-to-Door Rounds of Kurenti
In February, the sound of cowbells in the Ptuj region signals the arrival of spring, marked by the traditional Kurent—an iconic Shrovetide figure. Wearing sheepskins, distinctive masks, and spinning a spiked stick called a ježevka, Kurenti are believed to chase away evil spirits and welcome a bountiful harvest. This ancient custom is celebrated with the vibrant Kurentovanje festival in Ptuj.

10 .The Art of Bobbin Lacemaking in Slovenia
Bobbin lacemaking is a distinctive Slovenian art form and a proud symbol of national identity, passed down through generations for centuries. This intricate craft involves twisting and braiding threads wound on wooden spindles called bobbins, following patterns on a pillow. Slovenia is home to over 120 lace making groups and schools, including the renowned Idrija school, which has been active for nearly 150 years. Beyond traditional uses in fashion and textiles, bobbin lace also inspires modern art, architecture, and even cuisine.

11. Dry-Stone Walling: Slovenia’s Ancient Construction Technique
Dry-stone walling is a traditional building technique that uses carefully stacked stones without any binder to create strong, durable walls. Common around the Mediterranean, this craft is found in Slovenia’s Karst region and Istria. The knowledge and skills of dry-stone walling are recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, linking Slovenia with seven other European countries.

12. Slovenia’s Midwives: Guardians of Life and Tradition
Midwives have supported women from the very first breath, providing care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond. Historically, midwifery was practiced by experienced women without formal training; today, it is carried out by trained healthcare professionals who honor these traditional skills. Slovenia, where the first midwifery school was established in 1753, is among eight countries advocating for midwifery’s inclusion on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In addition to its natural, cultural, and intangible UNESCO heritage, Slovenia is also part of several other prestigious UNESCO programs and networks. The country is home to four biosphere reserves recognized by the World Network of Biosphere Reserves: the Julian Alps, the Karst, the Mura River, and Kozjansko & Obsotelje, each known for their commitment to sustainability and biodiversity.

Slovenia also boasts two UNESCO Global Geoparks—Karavanke/Karawanken and Idrija—celebrated for their unique geological features and educational value. Ljubljana has been named a UNESCO City of Literature, highlighting its vibrant literary culture. And through the Freising Manuscripts, the oldest preserved written documents in a Slavic language using Latin script, Slovenia is part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World program, further underscoring the richness of its cultural and historical legacy.
