Three Essential Items to Pack for Your First Hunting Trip

July 3, 2026 by kevinwilkerson Leave a Comment

Your very first hunting trip. It’s exciting, right? Maybe you’ve grown up with family who are passionate about hunting. Or maybe this is your attempt at getting back into nature. Either way, this is a big step. And it’s not one to be taken lightly.

Hunting requires a lot of preparation. There are local state regulations to check, Hunter Education certificates to obtain, gear to purchase, and practice to complete. It’s a lot to be responsible for. Then, on top of all that, you’ve got to worry about your backpack.

Knowing how to pack a hunting backpack is one thing. But first, you need to know what to pack. It is often tempting to throw in every what-if item – from extra batteries to your favorite pillow – but don’t fall into that trap. Instead, use the items below as a starting point.

1. A First Aid Kit

No one wants to imagine things going wrong, especially not on a hunting trip. However, it can happen. Maybe you become unwell. Or you take a tumble and twist an ankle. Or a more serious emergency might occur, and you need to wait for professional help. Whatever happens, having a first aid kit to hand is a must.

There are lots of risks in hunting. There’re sharp tools, rough terrain, remote locations, as well as the possibility of bug bites and allergic reactions. A well-stocked first aid kit should be able to help if any of these aspects prove problematic.

To ensure you can treat any number of injuries and ailments, you need to include the following items in your first aid kit:

• Elastic bandages for sprains,
• Blister treatments,
• Hemostatic gauze for severe lacerations,
• Antiseptic wipes,
• Medical tape,
• Painkillers,
• Antihistamines,
• And lots more.

2. Your Weapon of Choice

It seems like an obvious one, but you must pack your chosen weapon. This item – whether it’s a bow or a firearm – serves as the core tool of your hunt. It will define your hunt, determine your setup, and ensure you are prepared to ethically and safely harvest game.

The weapon you select should be the one you are more comfortable with. It should also be the one you have practiced with most. This ensures you know how to use it. Doing so allows for accurate, humane, and clean shots. After all, each weapon will have its own requirements – including approaches to range, shooting technique, and stealth.

3. Blaze Orange Clothing

Visibility matters when hunting. You’ll be in an environment that is filled with woods, making it difficult for other hunters to spot you. To avoid tragic accidents, you must pack – and wear – blaze orange clothing when appropriate.

Such brightly colored clothing could also be used for emergency signaling. If you ever become lost, injured, or disorientated, then this color will make you a beacon of light for Search and Rescue parties.

Fortunately, there are numerous types of clothing that will do the job. The safety vest. The ball cap. The jacket or parka. If any of these are bright orange, then you will be visible from quite some distance.

To conclude, your first hunting trip will be memorable. You must pack your backpack well to ensure it is a positive memory, not a negative one. Thankfully, this post outlines three of the must-have items to include in your preparations.
