Who doesn’t love a good happy hour? Everyone I know does anyway.
And would you believe there is a National Happy Hour Day? It’s annually on Nov. 12, which in 2026 is on a Thursday. It’s not that any true PubClubber needs a designated day to go to a Happy Hour but I suppose it’s good that someone has created a day to recognize this non-peak time of specials at bars and restaurants.
After all, happy hours are a great time to go to an expensive place that’s not so expensive during that time, to go out after work for some cheap(er) food and drinks and to socialize with other people, be it fun friends, co-workers, strangers in the bar or sometimes just the bar staff. The latter is particularly important if it’s a busy place during peak hours because you can form a relationship with the staff that can really come in handy later. You may get a table or a drink from a swamped bar because the bartender recognizes you as a regular patron.
So there are many reasons why these are great times to be at a bar and here’s 10 tips on how to make the most of a happy hour:
1.) Go to a lively bar, not just a place with drink specials. Atmosphere matters.
2.) Try a happy hour somewhere other than your usual go-to spots. A change of scenery is always good and you may find a place you really like.
3.) Order the house happy hour drink if there is one. Happy hours are excellent times to try different things.
4.) Sit at the bar and talk to the bartender. A good bartender can tell you more about the local scene than online reviews and often-misleading social media posts, plus it’s far better for conversations with others than sitting at a table. The exception to this rule is when you’re with a group.
5.) Check out the food specials. You might as well try some of a place’s food as well as its drinks. Plus, having a couple of tasty appetizers can often make for a full dinner.
6.) Invite someone you haven’t seen in a while. Happy hour is a social occasion, not just an opportunity to save money.
7.) Check to see if a place has a late-night Happy Hour. Some bars and restaurants are also offering Happy Hours at night from, say 10-midnight. So you don’t always have to start early.
8.) Make friends with the regulars. They’re often the best source of local knowledge.
9.) Be a good happy hour customer. Tip well and be friendly.
10.) Remember that it’s the people that make the places. So the spots with the best happy hour prices are not necessarily the best happy hour bars or restaurants. Choose a place with a good, lively crowd. That’s where you’ll have the most fun.
