Rolling Stones, The Who, Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton Only Part Of Historic Show
Wow!
That’s the best way to describe the 12-12-12 concert at Madison Square Garden to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Bruce Springsteen. Eric Clapton. Bon Jovi. Billy Joel.
That alone is enough to fire up a rock ‘ roll fan. But to add Paul McCartney. The Who. And The Rolling Stones!? On the same night? On the same stage? That’s just insane!
And it was great, too. Epic, actually.
The single-song highlight was Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” Naturally, that would appeal to the audience and it was executed to perfection, with Joel’s singing, his keyboard expertise and the tenor sax bringing the song to life in New York City.
I watched it on AMC and it was like watching a Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. Or really, a documentary on the great rock bands of all time. It was impossible to change the channel.
Wwell, except during Alicia Keys and Kanye West. Yes, you have to appease the modern music fans, but sandwiching them between The Who and Paul McCartney was like putting Keith Richards between Beyonce and Faith Hill. It’s just out of place.
Still, the fact all this came together in little more than week is a tribute to the organizers, musicians and everyone who was involved in the event.
Madison Square Garden sure had a lot more stars and celebrities in it on that night than it does for Knicks games.
And you could feel the passion of the people, most of whom are from the shores knocked silly by Hurricane Sandy.
