Beach Volleyball Event Takes Place On Wednesday And Thursday

If you want to put a team into Manhattan Beach’s Charlie Saikley 6-man beach volleyball tournament, I highly recommend you do so before July 1.

After that date, registration prices increase significantly. Unless you are a corporate team; that fee stays the same but it’s expensive enough to begin with, at least if you ask me.

Anyway, the tournament is on for July 31-Aug. 1. That’s a Wednesday and Thursday, which is certainly better than last year’s Tuesday-Wednesday though not as good as Saturday-Sunday. Again, if you ask me.

Here’s the breakdown of prices before and after July 1:
• Non-sponsored 50+ for men, 35+ for women: $300/500
• Non-sponsored Men’s and Women’s Open, Masters: (50+ for men, 35+ for women): $650/900
• Teams sponsored by local businesses: $1,000/$1,200
• Corporate sponsored teams: $2,500/$2,500

This year’s event will have, like the past two, backpack inspections. The concert-type security people will be looking for alcohol, as any local knows by now, so the partying will have to be at a house party or the bars.

And frankly, the scene in the bars last year – at least Shellback Tavern and Ercoles – was pretty lively.

And I expect it to be the same this year and even picking up a bit by the end of the Finals on Thursday.

Look at it this way; those out during the week are the hard-core partiers and sometimes that makes it better than when it’s the masses.
