I always refer to New Year’s Eve as the ultimate amateur’s night.

And if there were a close second, it would be the Fourth of July.

America’s Independence Day is the country’s biggest bash, with everything from backyard BBQs to giant celebrations in the biggest cities. It’s a huge time to go to the beaches, rivers and lakes and, of course, with all that comes plenty of drinking.

And there’s nothing wrong with plenty of drinking, of course. As long as you follow the Bar Blogger’s Top 4th of July Party Tips.

1.) It’s Not A Sprint, It’s A Marathon. Don’t feel the need to get buzzed immediately. Treat your drink as a side dish to the main entree, the potato salad to the cheeseburger. The main focus is where you are partying and with whom you are partying. The alcohol is just the party prop.

2.) The Fireworks. This is keeping in step with the top tip: Don’t get so tipsy that you miss the fireworks! That may seem a simple point but I’ve known people who have done it and they’ve regretted it the rest of the weekend. And they have to wait an entire year to redeem themselves.

3.) Watch The Shots. Don’t wake up and do shots. In fact, don’t do shots at all until late in the afternoon. This is not only because shots are strong and hit you quickly but because shot are like eating potato chips: You can’t stop at just one. This is especially true if you are at a party; it’s easy to get carried away which will, of course, mean you may literally be carried away from the party after you pass out at it. That being said, Jell-O shots are a fun addition to any party.

4.) Act Like You’ve Been There Before. In other words, don’t be an idiot. Don’t pick fights, don’t try and be the alcoholic hero by showing everyone how macho you are by downing the most drinks, don’t get drunk and jump off a balcony tying to make a big spash in the pool. Have fun, be the life of the party if that’s your style, but do so with a few responsible brain cells still functioning.

5.) If You Are At A Party, Respect The Host. I’ve hosted a lot of parties, and been to a lot of house parties, and I can tell you from personal experience nothing is a turnoff like someone who does not respect the host or the house. Someone who immediately goes and tries to raid the bar saying, “where’s all the beer!?” Or breaks in the bathroom line, spills drinks, makes a mess grabbing food, etc. Worse yet, getting sick or causing some other thing that requires a massive cleanup effort. The host hates it, the people at the party hate and guys, GIRLS hate it.

6.) Celebrate America’s Independence, The Reason There’s A Party In The First Place. Don’t lose sight of the fact it’s the 4th of July, the celebration of America’s independence. Salute our forefathers and all those who have worked to preserve our freedoms over the centuries.

7.) Laugh, Smile And Party! Enjoy the moment. Heck, it’s a great, fun celebration and enjoy it to the max. Just don’t be an idiot. Be fun!

Cheers!
