Where L.A. Transplants Watch Arizona State, Ohio State, Nebraska, Wisconsin & More Schools
In Los Angeles, a huge number of transplants from the rest of the USA means there are fans and alumni of schools who gather to watch games together and of course, that’s in a bar.
Here’s a rundown of bars in Hermosa Beach where groups – sometimes 50+ strong – gather to watch their college football team play each Saturday.
• ARIZONA
Underground Pub. This is the zone for the Zonies, the large bar (by Hermosa standards anyway) behind Hermosa Ave., & 14th Street (the entrance is in the alley around the corner from the “jazz” wall mural.
• ARIZONA STATE
American Junkie. Each time Arizona State scores – which is often – the bar tosses out shots.
• NEBRASKA
Chelsea Pub. Some of the nicest college football fans anywhere root for Nebraska and in the South Bay, you can find them here each and ever Saturday. They are also a very local group to their Huskers.
• OHIO STATE
American Junkie. This is one of the largest alumni gatherings in the South Bay and fans are especially enthusiastic about their Buckeyes these days. this used to be a Michigan bar, by the way.
• PENN STATE
Silvio’s. This tiny bar – which is also home of Chicago Bears fans on Sundays – is where local Lions roar.
• VIRGINIA TECH
Chelsea Pub. There are, believe it or not, more than 50 Hokies in and around the South Bay. The friendly folks at the Chelsea Pub (the lounge attached to the Underground Pub) accommodate them each week. Tho, once the season starts and the Hokies begin their annual slide, only the die-hards show up late in the year.
• WISCONSIN
The Underground. It used to be Sharkeez but the owner of The Undergound is from Wisconsin. Most of Wisconsin’s game start at 9 a.m., and the faithful – who are able to put away a lot of beers in a single day – often stay for other games throughout the day.
• USC & UCLA
OB’s Sharkeez and anywhere. An older (40s and up) Trojans crowd goes to OB’s in Manhattan Beach but oddly, there is no official viewing bar of either USC or UCLA in the South Bay. Rather, you’ll find fans of each school sprinkled among the various bars. There’s always a few USC fans in Sherkeez Hermosa.
