Hurricane Joaquin is not apparently much of a sports fan.

As Joaquin parallels the Eastern Seaboard late this week and into the weekend, it threateners college football games – including two major contests – plus potential cancelations of MLB games and the NASCAR race.

According to AccuWeather.com, delays, widespread flooding and power outages are just a few of the many impacts that Joaquin could unleash this weekend.

The final weekend of the Major League Baseball regular season could be over before it starts in Philadelphia, New York City and Baltimore.

College Football Impacted Games & Locations

More importantly, it’s been raining in Athens for the key SEC game between Alabama and Georgia. The AccuWeather game-day forecast calls for cloudy skies and a 60% chance of rain in the afternoon rising to 75% in the evening. Kickoff is at 3:30.

Already, Georgia officials have closed some parking areas due to heavy rain.

It’s even worse up the road in Clemson, S.C., where the Tigers host Notre Dame.

ESPN Game Day is there and AccuWeather is expecting heavy rain during the show (9 a.m.-noon). Partly cloudy skies are predicted for the afternoon and evening (kickoff is at 8 p.m.). As PubClub.com writes this article on a Thursday evening (Clemson time), the area is under a flash flood watch.

In another game, kickoff for Michigan at Maryland has been moved up from primetime to noon to try and avoid heavy rain. The Big Ten Network previously postponed its on-location pregame show citing weather concerns.

NASCAR Dover Chase Race Could Be Postponed

In Dover, Delaware, Joaquin threatens the NASCAR race. Organizers are monitoring the hurricane and its impacts but will likely not make any decisions until race day on Sunday. This is the third event in the 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

“Historically, changes that NASCAR makes to the on-track schedule are not made until the day of each event. We will update you quickly if changes must be made to the schedule as a result of the weather,” Dover International Raceway said on its website.
