Santa Monica Sports Bar Is Home To More Than Boston Teams For 2013 College Football Season
Alabama and Notre Dame fans shared the bars for the BCS National Championship game last season, and for 2013 they will be sharing the same sports bar in Los Angeles.
Sonny McLean’s in Santa Monica – known primarily as the Westside’s top Boston bar – is hosting alumni groups from both the Tide and the Irish for college football games.
Alabama’s Los Angeles alumni have bounced around in recent years, moving from Mr. Pockets in Manhattan Beach to South (where they felt overwhelmed from the overwhelming number of Michigan alumni) to The Varsity, which they liked very much but The Varsity closed. So now it’s Sonny MeLean’s.
Notre Dame alumni also faced a closed bar, Cafe Boogaloo in Hermosa Beach. And now both are at Sonny McLain’s.
It’s a house divided to be sure. While Alabama and Notre Dame have rarely met on the field, the times they have usually are for the National Championship. Bama fans also recall – with must disdain – the times the Irish jumped the Tide in the final polls for titles. Bama fans to have the edge lately, tho, after last January’s 42-14 bashing in the BCS Championship.
Sonny McLain’s is located at 2615 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, CA.
