Fans of Bears, Patriots, Steelers, Eagles Dolphins, Chiefs and Raiders Gather at the Los Angeles Bars To Watch Their Games
Hardly anywhere else in the vast city is the diversity of Los Angeles better display than on Saturdays and Sundays in the fall when alumni of college teams and transplanted fans of NFL teams gather to watch their games in specific bars throughout the area.
If you’re a Steelers fan, there’s bars for you. Same with the Patriots. Or Michigan Wolverines.
There’s so many people from other areas who gather to watch their games that those who actually grew up in Los Angeles suddenly feel outnumbered and out of place. But hey, this is football and passion for the teams runs deep from people from the East Coast, Midwest and South.
So here’s a list of where fans of these teams gather to watch their teams at these Los Angeles-area bars:
NFL
• Chicago Bears. Silvo’s, Hermosa Beach. This is a small bar on the Hermosa Beach Pier (capacity only about 50), so it can get pretty crowded. Here’s a review of Silvio’s during a Bears game. For those in the Newhall/Santa Clarita area, there’s Vincenzos Newhall Pizza (24504 1/2 Lyons Ave.).
• Green Bay Packers. The Park Sports Bar in Burbank (2008 West Burbank Blvd.).
• Kansas City Chiefs. Caminiti’s Pizza & Sports in Burbank (1220 West Burbank Blvd.). Great pizza!
• Miami Dolphins. Happy Ending Bar, Hollywood (7038 Sunset Blvd). Also Leo’s All-Star Sports Bar & Grill in La Crescenta-Montrose (2941 Honolulu Ave.)
• New England Patriots. The #1 spot for all Boston sports is Sonny McLeans in Santa Monica. Good bar, but all sitting spots are reserved and others must line up early to squeeze into the place. An alternative is Fat Face Fenner’s, a Boston bar that overlooks the Hermosa Beach Pier. It’s more spacious and actually has a bar in the front – sometimes manned by the “magical” Juan – and back of the place. Plus lots and lots of Boston fans. Just wish the chowder was better! Also, for those in the Burbank area, Caminiti’s.
• Oakland Raiders. All over town, but two bars in particular stand out, the Park Bar & Grill in Burbank and the Norwood Inn located in Northride (or North Hills, 405 close to the 5, 16200 Nordoff St.)
• Philadelphia Eagles. The main “must go” place is the Shack in Santa Monica. Yes, the burger joint. Unfortunately, the place is tiny and in such demand that people start lining up at 7 in the morning just to get inside. Forget getting a table; those are reserved years in advance. Even Dick Vermeil would have to stand in this place. Well, maybe someone would give up their seat for him. But not Ron Jaworski. AND NOW THIS JUST IN… There’s another Eagles bar with great seating, no waiting and run by two guys from Phily. It’s Chelsea Pub and Lounge in Hermosa Beach, which is the nice place connected to the Underground Pub on 14th Street and Hermosa Ave.
• Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steel-Pit Sports Grill in Tujunga and the new Game Changers in Hermosa Beach. The Steel Pit is located at 7279 Foothill Blvd. Regarding the latter, Shark’s Cove has closed but it’s been remodeled and is now called Game Changers. It’s wall-to-wall Steelers fans and Terrible Towels. If it’s too crowded here, simply go next door to Cafe Boogaloo, which has an awesome deal on champagne Sunday brunch. Here’s a review of Game Changers.
Another big sports bar to check out for several games and teams is Big Wangs in Hollywood (1562 N. Cahuenga Blvd.)
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Here’s a few places people watch the games around town. Many groups gather at the lively bars in Hermosa Beach and click this link for a list of bars where groups of alumni gather (primarily Washington, Wisconsin, Big 10 schools, plus USC and UCLA and, frankly, just about any other school, even SEC teams).
• Alabama Crimson Tide. South in Santa Monica. Although the smaller contingent of Crimson Tide alumni don’t like it when the much larger Michigan folks roll in for their games.
• Michigan Wolverines. South in Santa Monica and Sangria in Hemosa Beach.
• Nebraska Cornhuskers. Happy Ending in Hollywood, Hooters in Long Beach and Shore in Hermosa Beach. The latter has $3 drinks during the game, including bottles of Stella.
