Whale Watching Season in Hervey Bay, Australia, is underway.
Running from July 1 to late October it has “guaranteed sightings” starting July 15. Featuring small-group, three‑hour “Ultimate Whale Watch” eco‑tours, this season invites visitors to discover why Hervey Bay is globally celebrated as the “Whale Watching Capital of the World” and the planet’s very first Whale Heritage Site.
To start the season, the Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) Australia Team is havng a Blessing of the Fleet at the Great Sandy Straits Marina on on Friday, July 11 at 4 p.m. The entire whale fleet will form a procession as they are all blessed for a safe and successful whale watching season—a great family night with children’s activities and market stalls.
Hervey Bay is one of only a few places on Earth where migrating humpbacks pause in their arduous ~10,000 km journey to rest, socialize and nurture calves in calm, predator‐free waters. Designated the world’s first Whale Heritage Site by the World Cetacean Alliance in 2019, Hervey Bay epitomizes sustainable whale and dolphin watching, community engagement, education, and cultural celebration.
Celebrating nearly 40 years of humpback research and photo‑identification, Pacific Whale Foundation’s Hervey Bay eco‑tours not only provide immersive wildlife encounters but also fund critical conservation and educational initiatives. “We have a few theories, but Hervey Bay is unique in that humpback whales consistently approach boats,” said Andrew Ellis, Pacific Whale Foundation board member.
