The old meets the new at the New Inn at St Owen’s Cross in England.
Originally a 16th century coaching inn which won best pub in England in 2023 from AA Hospitality, the New Inn at St Owen’s Cross is an old-school pub wih a new-age mentality. So you get the tradition with the modern.
It was actually closed for about five years but was revived by three local businessmen who bought it during the pandemic. They included notable chefs Michael Fowler and Mark Green (the main man behind Two Farmers Crisps) and his family, and they completely restored it to its original form with, among other things, exposed timbers, Elizabethan and woodwor. Yet they also added a modern flair with items such as woolly fabrics, velvet chairs and cozy fires in stone inglenooks to the gastropub.
The historic towns and villages of Herefordshire are right out the door.
The restaurant serves what could best be described as modern pub fare. For example, grouse and age beef tartare or Wagyu cross Angus sirloin with ox cheek tortellini, butternut squash fondant, truffle, girolles, lardons, mushroom ketchup). They also have a simpler bar menu which includes the likes of Hereford Longhorn steak burgers and moules marineiere. Guests can expect full English breakfast with local sausages, homemade bread and Wye Valley honey porridge.
The owners also make their own gin liqueur.
Like many gastropubs and inns with pubs in UK, New Inn at St Andrew’s Cross uses eviivo to run their business as it seamlessly integrates all OTAs and has the tools to run guest management with pubs and restaurants.
In addition to winning the AA Hospitality award, the restaurant also gained a 3rd AA Rosette for its food (one of only 240 in UK, and of only 15 pubs with 3 rosettes.)
