The snowboards and skis are out of the closet ready to be loaded into the car, yet there has actually been too much snow for the mountain to operate. But as people do return and “head to the slopes” they will be greeted by a new attraction, a roller coaster in the snow.
Big Bear now has the Mineshaft Coaster, one-of-a-kind thrill ride, commonly referred to as a mountain coaster, built directly into the mountainside. It stretches for more than a mile on a stainless-steel-tube track.
The Mineshaft Coaster has all the thrills of a roller coaster such as steep descents, hairpin turns, tunnels, bridges and 360-degree corkscrews. What makes this ride even more desirable is the rider actually controls of the speed of the coaster cart, which can reach max speeds of 30 mph. With Mother Nature’s recent snow dumping, the track now has towering snow berms that measure up to six feet high, which gives riders a completely different perspective of the snow that can only be experienced on the Mineshaft Coaster.
“The massive heaps of snow that surrounds the Mineshaft Coaster track will give riders a sensation in the snow like no other. You’ll be going through a massive tunnel of snow most of the way down!,” exclaimed Alpine Slide Big Bear General Manager Julie Eubanks. “For those seeking a one-of-a-kind experience in the snow, look no further because this is it. Even for those who’ve ridden it before.”
The Mineshaft Coaster is located at Alpine Slide Big Bear, 800 Wildrose Lane (just off big Bear Blvd.). The recreation also has snow-tubing, the Alpine Slide ride and the Soaring Eagle zipline.
The price is $20 per ride ($10 for children).
