A late spring snowfall will be enough to keep Mammoth Mountain open at least through Memorial Day.
The California ski resort, which definitely lives up to its name, received nearly two feet of fresh snow during Easter Weekend and the following week.
Better yet, the snow is high in water content and that will help ease the state’s drought situation, as the snowpack provides water to residents and businesses through an aqueduct.
“Lifts will keep spinning through Memorial Day, May 30,” is now posted on the mountain’s website.
It also lists events and activities for Memorial Day Weekend, including a “weekend full of sea-themed fun in the mountains” with live music, costume contests, drink specials, giveaways as part of the Mammoth Yacht Club (there are no yachts in Mammoth, of course, but you can join the #MammothYachtClub for free.
On May 27, the Mammoth Bike Park, Sierra Star Golf Course plus select Adventure Center activities will open for the summer.
But the top reason Southern California skiers and snowboarders go to Mammoth is for the snow, of course. And the resort is – as this article is being written – getting pounded by fresh powder.
Temperatures are in the 30s dropping into the 20s at night so the snow won’t melt away under the sun.
The lifts are open from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Then it’s ski apres time of course!
