See Huge Waves Crash In Redondo Beach From L.A. Heavy Winds

Water Smashes Over King Harbor Seawall

Waves leap over the Redondo Beach jetty on a windy Los Angeles day.

It was quite a show put on by nature, and PubClub.com had a front-row seat.

Heavy winds of hurricane force hit Los Angeles on a wild Sunday the last day of January. In some areas, winds hit 115 mph, and in the South Bay Beach Cities, they reached nearly 75 mph.

All this made for spectacular viewing of waves slamming into the Redondo Beach seawall in King Harbor.

PubClub was able to view this from the comfortable perch of the King Harbor Yacht Club (a friend is a member) with a nice, big glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, to boot.

The waves would first flow over the far end of the jetty at the entrance to King Harbor, then leaped over about halfway down, then literally SLAMMED into it at the end, right in front of the yacht club.

They hit with such force they made a roaring sound and the spray leaped some 20 feet in the air above the jetty.

People watch the spectacular show from the deck of the King Harbor Yacht Club.

To say the least, this was quite a show, far more entraining than the Pro Bowl that was on TV inside the yacht club. The jetty did its job, tho, as the boats in the harbor were protected and pretty stable, considering the wild conditions.

There were ripples in the water but overall there was very little swell. “Bumpy,” is how one boat owner described being on his boat during the day.

The yacht club parking lot was flooded in places and water was falling down as if it were raining. One car was parked – foolishly – against the seawall and was doused by waves as if someone had dumped a big bucket of water on it. Perhaps its owner just wanted it washed.

Check it all out with this video and these photos. Los Angeles doesn’t get severe weather very often so when it happens, it’s an event!
