6th Annual Event Is Sept. 10-11 At Avalon’s Descanso Beach Club
The Catalina Wine Mixer is two days of music from bands and DJs and, of course, wine.
It is Sept. 10-11 in 2021 and will also have a lot of helicopters because it is inspired by the 2008 movie Step Brothers, in which Adam Scott’s character refers to a a fictional event by that name as “the biggest helicopter-leasing event in the Western Hemisphere.”
The event was fictional in the movie but it is reality now. And while that quote isn’t true, are be helicopters at it. You can even take one to Avalon yourself, tho most people arrive via the Catalina Express ferry.
The Catalina Wine Mixer is held on Catalina Island’s Descanso Beach Club, which happens to be one of the few beaches in California in which it is legal to drink alcohol.
And there certainly is alcohol. More than 15 California wineries are taking part in this adults-only event. The bar also will be serving up its usual drinks, including the island’s signature Buffalo Milk and PubClub’s favorite cocktail at this location, the rum-heavy Descanso Destroyer.
For those interested seeing the movie there is a screening on Friday, Sept. 10.

There are hotel packages and for those who don’t want to stay overnight, there will likely be an 11:58 pm Catalina Express boat Long Beach on Saturday. So when they give “last call” you better not hang around and mingle for too long.

General Admission – $79
The General Admission ticket is valid for the Saturday and includes 2 wine-tasting tickets.
VIP – $369
The VIP ticket is valid for both days and includes the following:
• Friday evening VIP reception at Island Spa Catalina 6-8 p.m., including wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres (6-8 p.m.)
• Friday screening of Step Brothers (8 p.m.)
• Saturday VIP Lounge at Catherine’s Terrace (Noon to 10 p.m.), including wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres
• 6 wine tasting tickets (wine booths open 2-4pm)
“Step Brothers” Movie Screening – $20
• Ticket to “Step Brothers” at 8pm on Friday, September 10 at Avalon Theatre in the Catalina Casino.
