Two Harbors Catalina Island Harbor Reef Restaurant Dining Food Review

Steaks, Fish, Juicy Chicken & Fried Calamari Are The Stars Of This Menu

You may not expect to get fine dining in a place with dirt roads and just one restaurant, but that is indeed the case at Two Harbors on Catalina Island.

The Harbor Reef is an excellent restaurant. It’s located on the deck next to the daytime snack bar, so if you choose to eat outside, you can dine under the stars.

Its menu has perfectly-cooked steaks, fresh fish and sensational appetizers.

Start off with the fried calamari, so good that even I eat it because my friends always insist on ordering it (note: I do not generally like fried calamari or ever think of ordering it). As an alternative appetizer, the coconut shrimp is excellent and the white bean hummus spread is the ideal dinner-starter item.

Then again, there’s also the Ahi Tartare, which is perfect and big enough for a meal. That is, if you can keep the others’ chopsticks out of it.

For the main course, I happen to love the chicken dinner. I am always hesitant to order chicken in a restaurant because even in fine-dining places it often comes out overcooked and dry. But not at the Harbor Reef; it’s incredibly moist and juicy and spiced just right, so much so that while my dinner companions are bragging about what they are eating, I am quietly savoring every danged bite.

Two other stars of the menu are the steaks and the swordfish.

“The Harbor Reef is one of the few restaurants in Southern California that knows how to cook a steak correctly,” my friend says without fail when he picks up the menu.

The swordfish is so fresh you may have seen it earlier in the day if you were scuba diving off Two Harbors. If the swordfish flag is flying on the pier, then it was caught that day.

Prices are about what you would expect to pay in a good-quality restaurant and certainly less than at a fine-dining establishment. Appetizers are in the $15 range and the dinners – which come with two sides – are $30-35.

Reservations are recommended on Fridays and Saturdays, especially in the busy season from April-May. You can do this in person the day of or a day ahead of your meal.

You can also order food to go to take back to the boat or to your campsite.
