South Bay Culture Clash Combines With Dinks & Drinks
Here’s the details on what it is, how to join and, of course, all about the Happy Hours. This is the 8th season for it, and it starts on Friday, March 23, at 4 p.m.
What Is Happy Hour Volleyball?
By Ray Dussault, Founder
Happy Hour Volleyball is the illegitimate beach child sired from sand, sun, friendship and fun. It was born by happenstance on Friday, May 20, 2011 when I asked my volleyball friends to join me for one last session of volleyball before “the end of the world.”
The week before, loony preacher Harold Camping had predicted the world would end on Saturday, May 21. I had become addicted to the beach volleyball community and could see no better way to end it all than drinking with my friends and playing volleyball. I invited everyone I knew to meet me South of the Hermosa Pier with a beverage and a volleyball and Happy Hour Volleyball was born!
It was conceived as a one-off but for several weeks people asked me when we’d be doing it again. Since those early days, Happy Hour Volleyball has become a South Bay institution.
Starting this Friday, March 23, I’ll set up courts for the 8th fabulous season and, after playing till dark, old and new friends will adjourn to Hermosa Hennessey’s for drink and food specials all night!
We’ve welcomed volleyballers from all over the South Bay, Europe, Down Under or anywhere in the world. Friends have been made, marriages conceived and fun had by all. If you can bump and set, and have a desire to improve, you are never turned away. We play group and doubles. All courts are challenge courts.
Please like our pages and join our group on Meetup at South Bay Happy Hour Volleyball.
See you on the sand South of Pier and at Hennessey’s after the games. We do request a $25 annual donation. The donation will net you a cool shirt or tank with the Happy Hour Volleyball logo.
Thank you to Hermosa Hennessey’s, Anheuser-Busch, Deep Eddy Vodka, 33 North Promotions and Joya Sangria for their support!
