Be On The Lookout For Themed Costumed Characters Visiting The Pier Plaza Bars

The first thing to know about pub crawls in Hermosa Beach is that we don’t have them.
Some years ago, the police department issued some type of declaration that there are no pub crawls in Hermosa Beach. Apparently this was forgotten because recently, the city council began talking about banning them.
How this would be accomplished is anyone’s guess but let’s just say that on occasion, there are a bunch of people who get together on the same day at the same time who are dressed in the same type of costume who go to the same bars with each other.
Most of this happens on and around Pier Plaza in Hermosa for the simple reason there’s enough places within a few steps so the group can stay together during the day or night.

In the South Bay, there are three types of pub crawlers (sorry, I’m going to call them that for lack of a better term):
1.) Those who go all out with impeccable or creative costumes. This is most of the girls.
2.) Those who go along with the theme just enough to get by to look like they tried but don’t really care about the theme. They just want to party and meet girls/guys. This is most of the guys.
3.) Those who join late hoping to “swoop and scoop” any inebriated crawlers that those who have been out since the beginning are too inebriated to scoop.

Myself, I’m squarely in the middle, a solid No. 2. I just want to party, be with friends and meet new people. I don’t like filling up my small beach-sized closet with every possible pub crawl theme costume or spending a crazy amount of time (and money) on exotic outfits.
That being said, I have great respect for those who go through this effort, the No. 1s on this list.
As for the “swoop and scoopers,” I have this to say: if you’re not at the first bar then you’ll never be truly accepted by the group. First of all, people point and laugh at you saying things like “look a sober person, ha HA!” Secondly, you miss out on the initial comradery of the others, and that comradery is why pub crawls are so much fun in the first place.
Now, if you’re organizing a pub crawl in the South Bay, here’s three things you need to know to get people on it. You have to tell them the following because this is what everyone will ask:
• What is the cost? (People in the South Bay won’t ever pay to go a pub crawl.)
• What are the drink specials at the bars?
• At what time will you be at so-and-so bar? Oh, okay you’re not sure. Well, text me at so-and-so time to let me know where everyone is at that time. (Er, RIGHT, I’m going to take the time out from drinking with my friends or hitting on someone just to tell YOU where we are; hey, make it to the first bar and find out for yourself!)
No we don’t have pub crawls in Hermosa. But we do have interesting characters who sometimes go all to the bars together.
