Living In The Super-Social South Bay Means Lots Of Friends & Party Happenings

A Friday night is coming up and the Happy Hour Beach Volleyball group is playing and then going to, well Happy Hour (anyone who signs up on MeetUp is welcome to join), a friend is having a going-away party at another bar and surely a local band – of which we are friends of at least half the members – is playing and so-and-so is having a birthday party.
On another night, there’s another going-away party, another birthday party, some type of organized social mixer (hey, you never know who might be there!) and oh yeah, you get a text from a friend you’ve not heard from in a year who just happens to be in a local bar right now and is throwing out the guilt trip to have you join him/her.
This is such a part of the everyday lifestyle in the Los Angeles South Bay Beach Cities – and Hermosa Beach in particular – that it’s routine. The fact that there’s something happening nearly every night of the week makes it next to impossible to stay home and not to go into the bars. Try as we might, there’s always some event happening with your friends, or friends of your friends.
This is because, despite its changing face with upscale restaurants replacing long-standing bars and multi-million houses under construction every other block replacing rented apartments (and the renters that were in those apartments), Hermosa Beach is still a super-social beach town.
We all have dozens upon dozens of friends and when you know that many people, someone is always having a birthday. And that means going as a group to a bar to have drinks.
Actually, we really don’t have that many actual friends; they are more like acquaintances. If it were not for Facebook we would not know their last names and for the most part we don’t know what anyone does for a living.
That’s because such things are not important. What’s important to us is getting together, doing things together and having fun as a group.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to see who’s having a birthday party tonite and a friend from Canada I’ve not seen in three years just texted to tell me he’s waiting for me at the bar.
So I gotta run.
Cheers.
