Free Shows On The Sand A South Bay Weekly Highlight Event

But the Sunday highlight of several people in the South Bay during August are the free concerts on the beach, known as the Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series.
They take place on the sand on the south side of the Hermosa Beach pier from 5:30-sunset. The bands are winners from the “Battle of the Beach” held months earlier at the live music venue Saint Rocke and involve mostly original music from mostly local South Bay and Southern California bands.
But frankly, except when a band starts jamming a few popular cover songs, does the band itself really matter, for it’s the event that is the star here and not the musicians.
Some 5,000 people turn out for it, filling spots on the sand from the Sea Sprite Motel on 10th Street back to nearly 8th Street. They put down bedsheets, blankets and beach chairs and fill coolers with food and beverages – being sure to keep any adult beverages on the low – assemble in groups and make it for a perfect picnic on the beach.

THE BANDS:
• Aug. 5 – The Beat (English Beat)
• Aug. 12 – Sashamon
• Aug. 19– Big Head Todd and the Monsters
• Aug. 26 – Venice (featuring Robby Krieger of The Doors)

Single people get up and move around, walking to find and mingle with other single people. Some people prefer to be by the stage, dancing with sand between their toes. Others like to stay put.
How do you get a spot? Some people at or near the front have “regular spots” and go a cuople hours ahead of time to put down their towels and sheets. Others simply drop a beach towel at the best spot they can find when they arrive.
As a result of all this, it’s a great social scene but it’s also a Sunday destination for couples, friends, families, you name it.
And that’s why it’s such a #SundayFunday in the South Bay.
