Smackfest Events Puts On Another Spectacular Costume Beach Volleyball Event

The team themed costumes were great, the weather was like a dream and the mood was unbeatable.
As I sat back and digested the event that was Smackfest 2017, held Saturday June 16 in Hermosa Beach, CA, one thought kept popping into my head: this may well have been the best Smackfest of all time.
This was the 24th annual event and it was, quite simply, perfect.
The sands of time have been very good to Smackfest, and the sands of Hemrosa Beach were alive with activity on this day. More than 30 teams – and around 1,000 people – turned out for it, the teams dressed in costumes for particular themes. Smackfest, for those of you who may not know, is a coed beach volleyball tournament in which playing and winning take a backseat to playing around and winning “at the game of life” as one team member put it to PubClub TV.
Some of the better ones were “50 Shades Of Hermosa Beach” and “Endless Hermosa” in eye-blinding neon. and the most fun crew was the “Running Of The Bulls” team, led by a lively duo of very attractive girls.

The scene, too, was spectacular. DJ music pumped from the middle of a row of sponsor tents in an area that was crowded with people all day, team pop-up tents formed row after row after row of silly activity – normally-responsible adults acting like kids – and a true fun party atmosphere.
But really, it was the mood of everyone who made this such as special Smackfest. There were smiles all around and laughter served up more of the spirit of Smackfest than volleyball serves. I was interviewed by Art Mann and one of his questions was for me to assess the “douchebag” factor on a scale of one to 10. I though for a moment and said “.5;” in other words it was almost negligible.
But the best thing about Smackfest 2017 was that it left not just me but pretty much everyone looking forward to the next one.
