Costume-Themed Beach Volleyball Celebrates Silver Anniversary In Style
The teams filled up the courts at early as 8 a.m., dressed as pirates and wenches, airline crews and some in tutus – there was even a chicken coop – and they smacked volleyballs all over the sand in Hermosa Beach in Southern California.
Smackfest XXV in Hermosa Beach was a wild success, a celebration of 25 years of this whacky theme-themed beach volleyball tournament. The date was Saturday, July 13 and it involved not just the beach volleyball and costumes but DJs cranking tunes on the sand, a huge lineup of sponsor tents giving away their products (energy drinks, energy bars, water, etc.) and even a flyover from WWII-vintage airplanes.
Smackfest XXV had an air show!
There was also a whole lot lot of drinking going on, which is as much a part of Smackfest tradition as the volleyball and the costumes. As their is a “no drinking on the beach” policy on California beaches, that meant such consumption had to take place elsewhere and in Hermosa that was no problem.
The party spilled over into the bars – Patrick Molloy’s, Greenbelt, The Deck and Sharkeez. Oh, and Sharkeez; it was going off as Saturday afternoon spilled into Saturday evening.
Was Smackfest XXV the best one ever? No it was not but that’s not a knock because it was as spectacular as all the other ones, which is why Smackfest is consistently the top singles party event in the South Bay.
PubClub.com was on site and in the bars and did several live reports for PubClub LIVE!, with The Kevbeaux and Soul Cole. Below are posted videos from that live coverage.
