Hermosa Beach Residents Never Fail To Cheer On Their Team At Sharkeez Game-Watching Parties
They are positive at times when fans of other teams are taking to social media to blast unproductive players, posting to fire the coach and wanting to send the general manager to another planet.
They put up with fumbles at the goal line at the end of the game, almost as many interceptions as touchdowns from their quarterback (18 to 21 and counting) and so many missed field goals every attempt is a fingers-crossed moment.
Yet their enthusiasm never waivers. By talking to them, seeing them and reading their posts in their Facebook group, every week is like the fresh start of a new season.
They are the South Bay Super Chargers and they are a Los Angeles fan club for the most frustrating team in NFL history. Comprised mainly of people in the Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo beach area, they meet every Sunday at Sharkeez in Hermosa Beach to watch their team. That is, when they are not actually at the game.
Being a fan of the Chargers is not easy. You have to endure a lot of mental agony. Nearly ever year, the team is on the brink of making the playoffs – they always seem to start either 6-1 and collapse or 1-6 and make a strong rally – only to fall a game short the last week of the season.
This year the Bolts have not even done that; they are 5-9 as of this writing and their longest “winning streak” is two games. Its like being a Kansas Jayhawks basketball fan – no matter what the season is like, it’s bound to end in disappointment.
Yet the South Bay Super Chargers manage to stay upbeat and positive even as the team is collapsing in front of them. No matter the result of the previous week, no matter how hopeless the situation of their team is, they still go to Sharkeez to cheer on their beloved Bolts.
Then again, maybe they just like to get together each Sunday in the fall to drink beer at a lively bar by the beach. Whatever the reason, this group deserves as big a cheer as they always give to the Chargers.
