Unique Popular Activity Comes To Los Angeles Nightlife
Hatchet-throwing clubs are getting quite popular in the USA and Canada, and now Los Angeles has one.
It is called, very cleverly, LA AX (get it, a take off on LAX) and it’s located in North Hollywood.
And it’s not quite what you might think. This is not a bar or a nightclub but what the founders call an “axe-throwing social club.”
It does have a bar (of sorts, a portable one) serving beers and wines. There’s also snack-type food. But it it primarily an axe-throwing facility and you don’t have to have ever held an axe to go there and, in fact, enjoy it.

WHAT IS A HATCHET-THROWING SOCIAL CLUB?
A hatchet-throwing social club is a place where people can throw an ax at a round target. It is a series of cages for throwing and the idea is to create a place for a different kind of social activity, a corporate gathering, birthday party, etc.
IS IT SAFE?
Extremely. The throwing areas are in protective cages, instructors are watching everything and safety specifications are regulated by the National Axe Throwing Federation. You do have to use some common sense, such as not walking out in front of anyone as they are about to toss the axe.
THINGS TO KNOW:
Public walk-ins are welcome; no reservations are necessary…No closed-toe shoes (flip flops, sandals, flats, etc.)…Upon entering, you sign a release form and are handed a card. You then walk up to a “throwing area” and wait for help from an instructor…Throwing sessions are as long as you want, but generally, you’ll make a few tosses, take a break and let someone else throw, then step in and do it again…The axes are provided by the facility.
THE FACILITY:
The building is kind of warehouse-style with 24 “targets” (soon to be 30) on two sides. There are tall tables and couches for socializing and sitting, murals on two long walls and pumping (pretty loud) classic rock music. As a result, it’s a buzzing, active scene.
PRICES (INCLUDES COACHING):
• $25/hr per person
• Parties of 2-5: $40 per person, private throwing lane. 1 hour duration. Reservations required.
• Parties of 6+: $40 per person, per person, private throwing lane. 2-1/2 hour duration. Reservations required.
• Leagues: $150 per person. 29-person maximum. 1 night for 8 weeks, 5 hours of throwing time per league night.
HOURS:
• Monday-Wednesday: 6-10 p.m.
• Thursday-Friday: 6-11 p.m.
• Saturday: 5-11 p.m.
• Sunday: 4-9 p.m.
