While has been been known for some time became official on Wednesday, Sept. 13.
Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
The International Olympic committee unanimously approved Los Angeles during a meeting in Lima, Peru.
“This is the moment Angelenos have been waiting for,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said.
Garcetti then signed the “host city contract,” which states the city will pay off any debts should the event – estimated to carry a tab of $5.3 billion – run over budget.
This will be the third Olympic Games Los Angeles has hosted, the other two being in 1932 and 1984.
“Everyone connected with LA 2028 is thrilled to be part of this win-win-win scenario for the Olympic movement,” bid leader Casey Wasserman said in a statement. “Together, L.A., Paris and the IOC will demonstrate the Games’ enduring value to host communities.”
Details on the Los Angeles Games – such as venues, the Olympic Village and everything else associated with the Olympics – will be released at a later date.
The past Games held in Los Angeles have utilized the Los Angeles Coliseum for track and field and opening and closing ceremonies. However, in its current state it is an aging facility in bad need of a major repair.
The Rose Bowl recently underwent a renovation and is likely to need another one by the time the Games get to Los Angeles.
The Staples Center will no doubt be utilized unless it is replaced by the time of the Games.
A good guess to hold beach volleyball will be in the beach volleyball mecca of the world, Hermosa Beach or Manhattan Beach.
