This is a legendary event for many reasons, and for the first time in several years it’s back on a Saturday. At least the second day of it. For many of its 40-plus years it was traditionally held on the first Saturday and Sunday of August.
That changed in recent years as Manhattan Beach officials felt the volleyball took too much of a backseat to the socializing. Team tents lined both sides of the sand for several blocks and in addition to the actual teams playing, thousands of mostly South Bay locals and friends of locals turned out to make it one big beach party.
It was quite the scene. Especially considering the teams were all decked out in themed costumes as if they were at some giant outdoor Halloween socializing event.
Recently, however, the event was having trouble attracting teams after it was moved to during the week. So in June the Manhattan Beach City Council unanimously voted to return it to the weekend. For a day.
Most of the teams will be eliminated on Friday, leaving Saturday to be like the “old Sunday” in which the highest-quality teams – which often have some of the USA’s top collegiate indoor players as well as touring professionals in 2-person beach volleyball – battle it out for the coveted championship.
And that coveted championship consists mainly of pride, as well an after-party put on by the team’s sponsor.
The event is free to attend for the public.
