Long-standing Santa Monica bar Britannia Pub is closing to make way for a – wait for it – Taco Bell. To be fair t it’s a Taco Bell Cantina, which does serve alcohol (beer, wine, sangria, and twisted freezes) in a non-fast food setting, it’s still a Taco Bell.
Here is a statement Britannia Pub posted on its Instagram account:
“We are here to inform you that after 30 incredible years at 318 Santa Monica Blvd, the Britannia Pub’s lease will expire on July 31, 2026.
“However, we aren’t saying goodbye yet! We expect to remain open on a month-to-month basis while the future tenant, Taco Bell Cantina, finalizes their plans to begin work sometime after July 31st so our closing date is TBD. This means there is still plenty of time to grab a pint and share a laugh at our longtime home.
“While change is coming to this corner, the Britannia spirit isn’t going anywhere. We are officially scouting new locations for Britannia 2.0.
“This next evolution of the pub will see the Cain boys taking the reins, ensuring that the legacy of great service and community remains in the family while bringing a fresh energy to our next chapter.
“As soon as we have secured our new home and have more details to share, you will be the first to know.
“Thank you for being the heart and soul of this pub. We look forward to seeing you at the bar for many more rounds before we make our big move!
“Cheers, The Britannia Pub Management & The Cain Family”
In addition to being a cozy locals’ hangout, Britannia Pub was also Santa Monica’s home of Penn State football alumni and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Santa Moncia does have one other English pub, the legendary Ye Olde King’s Head pub a few blocks down Santa Monica Blvd.
