Welcome to the PubClub.com South Bay Party Report for the weekend of July 22-24. The party scene is highlighted by the biggest beach bash of the year, the annual Smackfest coed beach volleyball tournament. So read on about this and more in Hermosa, Manhattan & Redondo Beach!
SMACKFEST 2016
It’s here, our biggest beach party of the year! Smackfest 2016, 1,000+ people on the beach, a DJ, entertainment, players running in and out of the bars (Sharkeez is the official bar for the teams), all making for a full and fun day at the Hermosa Beach Pier.
What crazy team themes will be out there this year? Which of those teams will be the first to lose all its games, which team will be living the PubClub.com cheer of “Win Or Lose, We Booze!?”
The tournament starts at 9 and around 2 it’s the annual salute to Neil Diamond when the entire beach stops and everyone sings “Sweet Caroline,” providing fun flashbacks of the Magnum P.I., team of the glorious 6-man days.
PubClub.com will be doing Twitter and Instagram posts (hashtags include #Smackfest2016, #pubclub and #HermosaBeach) and maybe we’ll even do a little live streaming on Facebook.

Of course, you know the drill for drinking on the beach. It’s not allowed here in Hermosa and while the cops are very cool don’t do anything to create a problem. As we’ve seen with the aforementioned 6-man, things can happen – even perceptions of things – to jeopardize an event (can you imagine this being held on say, a Tuesday!?).
So be wise, don’t jeopardize!
Remember last year when it rained!? Poured actually. That sent people diving into the bars (some quite literally). There’s little chance of that happening this year. In fact, Saturday is going to be the warmest day of a warm and sunny week with highs in the mid-80s.
The pre-party, which is open to everyone, is Thursday at Sharkeez. The players post-Smackfest party is at The Deck starting at 8 p.m.

NATIONAL TEQUILA DAY & NATIONAL SCOTCH DAY

I’m not making this up folks! These drinking days have been around for a while but it’s the new ones that are silly, like Sunday is National Drive-Thru Day. A better one Sunday is National Tequila Day, followed shortly thereafter by National Scotch Day.
And on the horizon, National Rum Day and many more!

POLLIWOG PARK SUNDAY CONCERT
It’s the Manhattan Beach Parks’ 75th anniversary and there’s jazz, rock and even (gasp!) karaoke. Here’s a rundown of the Polliwog Park concerts and the full summer lineup.
LINGERACE VOLLEYBALL
Mark your calendars next Saturday for the Lingerace beach volleyball tournament. It’s in Santa Monica – can you say road trip on bicycles!? We can hit a few bars on the way back to the South Bay! The Lingerace girls are playing in Smackfest so go up and say hey and ask about playing in their tournament or getting into the coveted VIP tent.

COEDS VOLLEYBALL & KICKBALL LEAGUES
The Smackfest Events coed 4-s volleyball and kickball leagues started this week but it’s not too late to sign up for either. Also, the Hermosa volleyball classes start next week. Sign up at the Smackest Events web page.
SAN DIEGO ROAD TRIP: DEL MAR OPENING DAY & OTL REWIND

Del Mar Opening Day was as fun as always; in fact, I never saw a race! We spent most of the time mingling by the hat contest area. Then we went to Brigantine by the track to do some more social mingling and finished the fun day at En Fuego in Del Mar which was – once again – on fire!!!
The next day we went to the OTL. The initial impression was that it reminded me of the old Estero Beach volleyball tournaments. Perhaps, even, a one-day Burning Man.
You can walk around the sand drinking a beer (think about that while you’re at Smackfest!), and they have fragile-looking wooden stands set up selling food, t-shirts, ice cream, etc. Even a couple of them are bars.
PubClub also learned something else, that the best day to be there is the first Saturday (this is a two-week event), when it’s an all-out beach bash. That is the plan for next year!
BIKE TOURS IN THE LA TIMES TRAVEL SECTION!
A little personal pat on the back here – my Beach Cities Bike Tours were featured in last Sunday’s Los Angeles Times Travel Section! That’s a HUGE PR hit, one that was months in the making. And the writer has now asked me to join him for his Happy Hour Hiking Club gatherings!
I can’t possibly turn that down and since it’s in Venice, I’ll be riding my baby blue Kona beer beach cruiser to it. (Future Party Reports will provide details on how to win this bike for yourself!)
