Space-Themed Craft Brewery Is Near SpaceX In Gardena

The South Bay area of Los Angeles is getting more crafty when it comes to beers and breweries.

Already a mini-mecca of microbreweries, the series of cities just inland from the beaches of Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo has expanded beyond Torrance to neighboring towns.

Ximix Craft Exploration is open and pouring beers in Gardena. It’s just down from SpaceX and after all, crafty engineers need a place to drink craft beer. It’s the second brewery here; State Brewing Company opened in 2016.

And just down the street in neighboring Hawthorne, there is LA Ale Works and Common Space Brewery to go along several craft breweries in Torrance (Absolution, King Harbor, HopSaint, Smog City, Strand Brewing and The Dudes among them).

Pronounced ZIM-ix, Ximix seeks to set itself apart with kind of a space theme (check out the beer tap handles for starters) and beers with the names of The Lost Astronaut (a dry hopped strong pale ale with Simcoe, Citra, Galena, and Glacier) and the Starseeker Blonde (a pale ale with a bit of a bite and a citrus finish).

 

Currently there are nine beers on tap with the full range of flavors, including golden ale, wheat, Belgian strong ale, stout and even a coffee IPA. Co-founder and head brewer Erik DeBellis really learned his craft at Babe’s Barbeque in the Coachella Valley where in 2015 it was named California Brewery of the Year at the State Fair Beer Competition.

Ximis is, DeBillis, explained “where Sci Fi meets craft beer.”

The tasting room is large and, for the moment, kind of bare. There is a little longing area for hanging out with your pals and a small patio. And there are large flat-screen TVs to watch sports because, well, sports and beers go together like space ships and space suits.

There’s no food, but the day PubClub was at Ximix, a person was grilling tacos for sale in the parking lot.

Now if you don’t want to go to Gardena to try its beers, they are also on tap at Standard Station in El Segundo and will soon be at other South Bay bars, as well.
