Stunt Draws Tourists & Locals On New Year’s Day
At about 3 a.m., on January 1, someone pulled off a New Year’s Eve (or really New Year’s Day) prank and changed the iconic Hollywood sign in Los Angeles to read Hollyweed.Placed on one of the revised letters from an “o” to an “e” was a peace sign and also a heart as a love sign.
Probably in celebration of the legalization of marijuana in California, the obvious pothead wanted to show off his (or her) approval of the new law. After scaling the huge sign, the prankster then went to an all-night liquor store and bought a bunch of snacks to cure the munchies.
Okay, PubClub.com made up that last part, but his or her actions caused quite a scene on New Year’s Day in Hollywood. Tourists and locals went to the area to capture photos.
Workers changed the sign back to his original Hollywood lettering by noon.
“We came here to see the Hollywood sign, not the Hollyweed sign,” one visitor told KABC TV-7 news. The visitor was a Penn State fan in town for the Rose Bowl, which had the Nittany Lions facing the hometown USC Trojans on Jan. 2.
This was hardly the first prank ever pulled at the Hollywood sign. About every two years, it seems, someone managed to mess with the letter. When you’re a celebrity in this town, you’re subject to a lot of attention and the occasional person willing to use it to spread a message.
It turned out to be a pretty good attraction for Hollywood, too, with all the people who went there in the morning to see the changed sign.
So welcome to the New Year, Los Angeles.
