For those watching the immigration protests in Los Angeles and are wondering where they are taking place and if the tourist areas are affected, here is your answer.

I lived in Los Angeles for 20 years and know it the way some of you know your own self. I’ve been to nearly every single spot the city and can tell you exactly what the situation is in relation to the popular areas.

Rest easy, because the detention center is in downtown Los Angeles, far away from any tourist attractions. The only landmark somewhat near them is run-down Union Station and Philippe the Original, the legendary restaurant that created the dipped roast beef sandwich. Here’s how far it is from major landmarks as done in approximate driving time, not distance. That’s because when you live in LA, you measure distances in the time it takes to drive there rather than in miles.

This puts it far from Hollywood and the Hollywood sign (45 minutes), Beverly Hills (1 hour), Santa Monica Pier (1 hour, 15 minutes), Santa Monica beach (same), Malibu (1 hour, 30 minutes) the South Bay Beach Cities (Hermosa Beach & Manhattan Beach; 1 1/2 hours), Long Beach (1 1/2 hours), Universal Studios tour (45 minutes), Warner Bros studio (1 hour), Disneyland (1 1/2 hours), Dodger Stadium (1+ hours on game day tho the Dodgers are in San Diego thru Wednesday, then host the San Francisco Giants).

If you are at any of these locations, you will not even know the protests are taking place in the same city. LA is so spread out, there is zero affect from the protests, other than conversations you might have among others and seeing it on TV if you’re in a bar. You’ll feel as far from the protests are you do at home.
