Here is an update on the San Diego-to-Ensenada ferry, which was originally slated to begin service in June 2024.

It is still in the works and officals now say it will begin in April 2025. If is to be operated by Azteca Ferries.  A full update is available here, including with the ferry schedules.

Last summer, we received this statement from the Port of San Diego.

“There is nothing new to report at this time,” Brianne Page, Public Information Officer (PIO), Marketing & Communications for the Port of San Diego, stated via e-mail after an inquiry by PubClub.com.

Back in April of 2024, Kurt Honold Morales, Secretary of Economy of Baja California, said “we hope that by June we would be starting the Ensenada to San Diego Ferry. Meetings are already being held with all areas, state and federal that have to do with this and also with the United States.

“You do not need to have anything signed, it is a transport like a cruise ship, and nothing is needed, only your travel documents. And in the future, the ferry can carry cars as well.”

A boat has already been secured from a British Columbia ferry system. The trip would take two hours, 15 minutes and cost around 500 pesos, or about $28 USD.

“The ferry gives one more option to visitors or people who want to do business between Ensenada and San Diego, to make it more agile,” Miguel Aguiñiga, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism said in April. “We know of other destinations where this concept has been very successful, and we hope it will be in the same way.”

The San Diego Port Authority would only say back in April that a ferry  “remains preliminary at this time” while adding “both ports are open to a trial run in the coming months.”

PubClub.com will update this story as we get details.
