It’s called Día de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, and in Mexico it’s a holiday to celebrate and honor deceased loved ones. It is happy time that remembers people’s lives. Families have colorful alters of flowers, and eat and drink the favorite foods of thier departed friends and famiy members.
The celebration is celebrated on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, and naturally San Diego has a lot happening for Día de Los Muertos. Here’s where to find the biggest celebrations.
Old Town Día de Los Muertos Mercado
Old Town, with its Mexican heritage – it was once a part of Mexico – has thousands of marigolds (a traditional flower associated with Día de los Muertos) in the courtyard and live entertainment on the Fiesta de Reyes stage. Merchants will host both traditional and more contemporary altars throughout the plaza. Fiesta de Reyes is open from 11 a.m.- 9 p.m. thru Nov. 2. On the actual Day of the Dead (Nov. 2), there is the Procesión to the Cemetery on at dusk.
For adults, Casa de Freds has several special drinks for the occasion: the Grave Digger (Fred’s Lager with a shot of Frida Kahlo Blanco tequila, $15.45), the La Llorona named after the weeping woman of Mexican folklore (Volcan Blanco tequila with blood orange, beets, lime, and agave syrup $14.95), the Dark Souls (Espolon Blanco tequila, blackberry, lime, Cointreau, and a hint of rosemary, $14.25) and Firda’s Flowers (Kahlo Blanco tequila with the vibrant flavors of hibiscus, Cointreau, and lime, $14.25).

San Diego Bars & Restaurants Day Of The Dead
Several bars and restaurants – and the cantinas in particular – all over San Diego will be having Día de Los Muertos celebreations. Most bars celebrate it the day after Halloweeen, which is Nov. 1.
