The day after Halloween, many people may seem as they are dead after partying at Halloween parties, pub crawls and bar events, but in Mexico, there is a tradition that actually honors the dead.

It’s called Día de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, and in Mexico it’s a holiday to celebrate and honor deceased loved ones. It is happy time that remembers people’s lives. Families have colorful alters of flowers, and eat and drink the favorite foods of thier departed friends and famiy members.

The celebration is celebrated on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, and naturally San Diego has a lot happening for Día de Los Muertos. Here’s where to find the biggest celebrations.

Old Town Día de Los Muertos Mercado

Old Town, with its Mexican heritage – it was once a part of Mexico – has thousands of marigolds (a traditional flower associated with Día de los Muertos) in the courtyard and live entertainment on the Fiesta de Reyes stage. Merchants will host both traditional and more contemporary altars throughout the plaza. Fiesta de Reyes is open from 11 a.m.- 9 p.m. thru Nov. 2. On the actual Day of the Dead (Nov. 2), there is the Procesión to the Cemetery on at dusk.

For adults, Casa de Freds has several special drinks for the occasion: the Grave Digger (Fred’s Lager with a shot of Frida Kahlo Blanco tequila, $15.45), the La Llorona named after the weeping woman of Mexican folklore (Volcan Blanco tequila with blood orange, beets, lime, and agave syrup $14.95), the Dark Souls (Espolon Blanco tequila, blackberry, lime, Cointreau, and a hint of rosemary, $14.25) and Firda’s Flowers (Kahlo Blanco tequila with the vibrant flavors of hibiscus, Cointreau, and lime, $14.25).

$8 Shots and $10 Libations All Night Long

From a Tiki Marg served in a skull mug and crafted with a blend of Flecha Reposado, Rum, Almond, Citrus, Spice & Everything Nice, to a Flecha Paloma mixed with Flecha Reposado, Lime, Grapefruit, Agave, Chile Con Limon – URBANA’s selection promises to cater to every discerning palate. There is also face painting from 5-8.

URBANA Mexican Gastronomy & Mixology is located in the The Sky Deck at Del Mar Highlands Town Center at 12841 El Camino Real Unit 200, San Diego.

San Diego Bars & Restaurants Day Of The Dead

Several bars and restaurants – and the cantinas in particular – all over San Diego will be having Día de Los Muertos celebreations. Most bars celebrate it the day after Halloweeen, which is Nov. 1.
