All-Star Game, Del Mar Opening Day & The OTL

While that could be written for just about anytime of the year, it’s especially true in July, for San Diego, and specifically for singles. There’s a series of events coming at you faster than dingers at the Home Run Derby.
There’s the Major League Baseball All-Star Game with a block party in the downtown Gaslamp, Del Maro Opening Day which is the social highlight event of the year and the wild and crazy two-week-long Over-The-Line softball tournament.
Plus, Del Mar’s fun continues with not just races but Friday night concerts. Here’s a look at each event and why they make San Diego the party capitol of the USA in July.
All-Star Weekend In San Diego
July 8-12
First of all, there’s people from all over the country in San Diego for the game. That alone makes for a festive atmosphere. Add in the Gaslamp and the downtown block party and you’ve got a great way to keep the party momentum going on the heels of the 4th of July.

Del Mar Opening Day
Friday, July 15
The turf meets the surf at this horse race track by the sea, but most of the horsing around occurs at the facility. This is San Diego’s premier singles socials event, in which gorgeous girls wear their best sun dresses and big derby hats and guys are in freshly-pressed Charlie Harper stylish bowling shirts.
The bars inside the facility are hopelessly crowded, so PubClub advises to get your drinks by the shaker-full at the outside stands. And don’t miss the hat parade, girls circling a gazebo in huge Derby hats.

Over-The-Line
July 8-9 & 16-17
Miss Emerson Contest is July 16
A wild beach party in which drinking on the beach is actually legal for the only time of the year, this is a kind of softball game with hundreds of teams bearing odd, unusual, creative and sexually-oriented names. Held on Fiesta Island there’s tens of thousands of people doing a little playing, a lot of partying and a lot of mixing it up between the sexes.
This event is so big it lasts for two weekends and the highlight is the second Saturday, the Miss Emerson contest.

Comic-Con San Diego
July 21-24
Convention Center/Gaslamp
You may not be a fan of action comic books but a lot of people are and some 130,000 pour into the Gaslamp. The normally lively Gaslamp will be even more buzzing and one place to check out is the Saturday rooftop party at the Hard Rock Hotel’s Float bar. This is THE hot afternoon party place in the summertime and it’s going to be, well, through the roof for Comic-Con. Cover: $10.
Del Mar July Concerts
On Friday, July 22 and 29, there are concerts starting at 4 p.m. Single people flood into the track for this event, skipping the racing. On Saturday July 30, Ziggy Marley is headlining a reggae festival. The concerts are free as long as you enter the gates before the start of the last race, which is at about 4 p.m.
General admission is just $5, $10 for a clubhouse ticket.
