Bingo, once an activity once favored primarily by seniors in seniors homes (or in Vegas at a restaurant table while you’re waiting for that hangover-helper breakfast to arrive) has made its way to a much younger generation.
And it’s a party.
In fact, at Mavericks Beach Club in San Diego’s Pacific Beach, it’s a bi-weekly event called Bingo Remixed SD. It happens every other Thursday on the first and third Thursday of the month in June and September and these days in July, the 3rd and 31st. And unlike what you’re likely to find among the greyhairs, there’s a DJ providing music on specific theme nights, everything from 80s to one-hit wonders.
During bingo nights, Mavericks gives away prizes to winners, plus there’s $5 Dobel Tequila Shots and $5 Jiant Hard Teas during the games, which go from 7-9 p.m.
According to Wikipedia, “bingo is a game of chance in which each player matches the numbers printed in different arrangements on cards. The game host (known as a caller) draws balls at random, marking the selected numbers with tiles. When a player finds that the selected numbers are arranged on their card in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, they call out ‘Bingo!.’ to alert all participants to a winning card, which prompts the game host (or an associate assisting the host) to examine the card for verification of the win. Players compete against one another to be the first to have a winning arrangement for the prize or jackpot. After a winner is declared, the players clear their number cards of the tiles and the game host begins a new round of play.”

If this sounds like a drinking game, something akin to flip cup or “Hi Bob” that”s perfectly suited for a happening bar in a fun beach town like Mavericks, you’re right.
Even better, Mavericks Beach Club’s weekday Happy Hour is in effect from 2-7 p.m, which provides a nice warmup to its bingo nights.
Bingo Remixed SD can also be found all over San Diego, at Backyard Brewery, Punch Bowl Social, San Diego Brewing Company, and Tony Pepperoni (Escondido, Rancho Bernardo and Vista) as well as at VFW 5477.
Maverick’s Beach Club is at 860 Garnet Avenue, in PB.
