The party scene in Pacific Beach, CA, just got bigger
If you did not think that was possible then you have not been to Hideaway, the city’s newest hotspot, a classy yet flip flops casual lounge. Around the corner from Crystal Pier on Mission Blvd., it is a daytime-to-nighttime destination that will quickly make its mark in this nightlife nirvana area of San Diego.
The open-air design is as inviting as a cool ocean breeze on a hot day. The multiple areas, which range from a lounge to outdoor seating with three bar spaces, are like being at different bars in the same space. (You know how it gets as some places; after a while you feel the need to move on to somewhere else but at Hideaway you can change locations without leaving the bar.) The staff is spot-on outstanding.

The drinks are vast. There are eight tequila, six vodka, four bourbon and four tiki cocktails, including the super-potent Fire Marshall Bill, a rum concoction that is modeled after the light-your-fire Fire Chief at the old-school Hawaiian bar Old Tony’s a couple hours up the Southern California coast in Redondo Beach. There are also mini kegs of cocktails and a volcano bowl of Fire Marshall Bills.
The food is way beyond bar food good, including tasty pizzas out of a huge oven in the back.
And then at night, the tables are removed, a DJ cranks up the music and Hideaway transforms from pub to club.

Of course, knowing the owners I would expect nothing less from them. They run the highly successful Southern California beach bar institution Sharkeez, along with Tower 12 in Hermosa Beach where Soul Cole, PubClubette Ashely and I do the PubClub podcast, PubClub LIVE!, the beautiful high-end Mexican cantinas Esperanza and others. They are also the ones responsible for creating the greatest neighborhood bar of all time, one that not only defineed the area but also the people who lived there, the original Sharkeez in Manhattan Beach. Hideaway might just do that in PB.
So it’s about time they got to San Diego. It enhances the nightlife in Pacific Beach, an area that is already teeming with great bars.
