James William Buffett – more popularly known as Jimmy Buffett – was born on Christmas Day in 1946. And the day after his birthday in 2023, San Diego’s Jimmy Buffett tribute band is playing a venue where Buffett played on occasion, the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.
Buffett is no longer with us – much to the chagrin of his legion of fans and the entire music industry – so people have to get their Buffett fix wherever and whenever they can do it. In San Diego, that means going to shows by Thejimmysbuffet, a tribute band so authentic they played in the parking lot prior to the last-ever Jimmy Buffett concert.
First chord at the Belly Up is at 8 p.m.
“To play a venue where Jimmy performed is very special,” said Chris Maddox, “Jimmy” in TheJimmysbuffet band. “And to do it the day after his birthday, well, wow. It’s going to be very emotional for a lot of us – myself, the band and people in the audience.”
Maddox, who appeard with the band on San Diego TV station KUSI within hours of Buffett’s passing on Labor Day Weekend, is very emotional about playing the songs of the traveling troubadour.
“We are not a Jimmy Buffett cover band,” Maddox explained. “We are a band who plays his songs as a tribute to Jimmy. We don’t try to be Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. We are just outselves singing songs we love and that Parrotheads love to hear. We are honored to being able to carry on the music of Jimmy Buffett.”
Tickets for the show are just $20 – the price of a lawn seat to a Buffett show about the time of the Feeding Frenzy album – and are available here: Tickets for Jimmy’s Buffet’s Jimmy Buffett Birthday Bash | Belly Up in Solana Beach, US
