Adventures Of Kevbeaux As I Explore And Discover The Coolest Things In SD

Hello San Diego, I’m Kevin – or Kevbeaux – and I run this website, PubClub.com.
I have fairly recently located from the Los Angeles Beach Cities to San Diego and this blog is my showcase for posting articles as I get to know this city. Follow me on my journey as I discover bars, restaurants, events, cool things to do, the neighborhoods and even the people.
When I stated “recently located,” I mean that I have been here two years. But only one, really, considering 2020 was kind of a lost year with COVID. Unlike when I lived in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach a couple hours to the north, I do not live at the beach.
Instead, I’ve done a total 180 in location and now live downtown. Specifically, I am in the Gaslamp Quarter. Yes, I have traded the “thump, thump, thump” sound of beach volleyballs being hit outside my door for music coming out of bars and pedicabs and the rumble of party conversations suggesting raucous behavior.
And sirens, too-loud motorcycles and cars racing around the streets (why do they do this; they can only go one block at a time!), the grinding engines of delivery trucks in the morning and – sadly – the boomboxes of the homeless at 4 o’clock in the morning.
Even with that last part, I love it. The restaurant and bar options are 10X what they are in Hermosa & Manhattan. The Gaslamp is a dynamic area and it’s often buzzing with activity. Everything I need is either a 5- or 10-minute walk or bike ride from me.
That being said, riding a bike in the Gaslamp and downtown isn’t exactly an ideal place to ride. For staters, the drivers are not used to seeing bikes like they are at the beach. And there’s not really any bike paths. The city should just let us ride on the sidewalks, which are wide enough to accommodate us pedalers as well as pedestrians.
I like being walking distance to the baseball stadium. In LA., there’s a reason Dodger fans don’t show up until the third inning and leave in the seventh – it’s so frustrating to get to a game! Here it’s 10 minutes by foot.
While I’ve only been to half a dozen or so games, I enjoy walking around Petco Park to feed off the atmosphere of the people who come to the Gaslamp for it. I also enjoy hanging out before games (as well as other times) at the somewhat hidden rooftop bar by the stadium Fairweather with the great drinks, bartenders, crowd and awesome tacos.
When I want to go to the beach, I either ride my bike or hop on public transportation. The latter is something that hardly exists in L.A., so it’s a real treat to have the trolley and efficient buses to get me around town. Heck, I even got rid of my car!
Even with all those things, the part I like the most about San Diego is that I am constantly discovering new places and activities. There are seemingly endless festivals and concerts.
A couple of friends, James Hills of MenWhoBlog.com and ManTripping.com and Heather Hills who books cruises through her site FlowVoyages.com, have taken to driving me around lately introducing me to the different neighborhoods.
Along the way Heather will point at a building and say “that place has the best burritos, that place has a lot of people say has best the Philly cheesesteak, but I like another place better” and things like that while I’m in the back seat whipping my head left and right trying to take it all in like a kid riding the monorail at Disneyland.
I can’t wait to share my adventures and discoveries here with you!
