Trekkies, Captain Kirk and Spock, Star Wars characters, superheroes, villians, long lines to get into Paramount’s Lodge activation, a ferris wheel, a beautiful blonde contortionist dressed up like a leopard, street performers from musicians to magicians and an incredible drone show above Petco Park.
These were among the things I saw at San Diego’s Comi-Con 2024.
I even got a free beer at Comic-Con.
It was from a pop-up “bar on Fifth Ave., from Focus features. Inside, along with a collecton of old-school TVs on a wall, a dummy with hi shead stuck inside the kind of juke box you still find in dive bars, a pool table and chairs stacked in what looked like a hurricane blew through the place was a long bar that handed out a can of beer. It was warm, for this bar was no allowed to serve drinks.
What I didn’t see was Jennifer Ganer get stuck in an elevator or nearly everything – nobody can, really – but San Diego’s #1 event once again provided days and nights of entertainment during a weekend in late July.
Some locals avoid going to the Gaslamp Quarter during Comic-Con like it’s going ot visit a despised relative. Not me. I love it. I enjoy seeing the people in costumes of their favorite superheroes or TV/movie characters, of the being in character and experiencing the music and shows of the street performers up and down Fifth Ave.

In 2024, it was much of the same as previous years, with activations from the studios creating huge interest – with lines like the kind you find at Disneyland to get inside – with the drone show taking things over the top as far as spectacles go for Comic-Con.
So why avoid it? Comic-Con is a city treasure that should be enjoyed by everyone, superheroes and locals alike.
