San Francisco Blog: Bay To Breakers 5 Important Things To Know

Costumes But No Floats And A ‘Zero Tolerance’ Alcohol Policy

Bay to Breakers San Francisco
People fill the streets of San Francisco for Bay to Breakers.

The 2024 Bay To Breakers is Sunday, May 19, from 8 a.m., until, well, you make it back to town.

Some could call this a “fun run” in that it’s not a serious foot race, but it’s really much more than that, it’s a rolling street party of sorts that goes 12K from the bay (under the Bay Bridge) to the Breakers (the end of Golden Gate Park).

Traditionally, it’s one of the wildest events of the year in “the City,” but things are a bit different this year. Here’s what you need to know before you go to B2B 2024.

1.) You Don’t Have To Run

In fact, most people walk it. They stop and chat, they watch all the sideshows that happen along the way, dance to the bands along the way and even join house parties at the entrance to Golden Gate Park.

2.) The “Zero Tolerance” Policy

This means no alcohol, which was once a focal point of B2B and what made it so much fun in the first place. People still do bring along alcohol; they just do it wisely and conceal it. B2B is now also a “non-smoking” event.

3.) No Floats

Darn, floats are no longer allowed! This means shopping carts, too, although the grocery stores have installed restrictors on the wheels so you can’t steal them anyway.

4.) You Can Wear A Costume

Costumes are still a big part of Bay to Breakers in San Francisco.

This traditional aspect of Bay To Beakers goes unbroken.

5.) Don’t Be In A Hurry

This is the biggest continual piece of advice PubClub can give to B2B’ers. The event is the fun part of this “race.” Once it’s over, it’s over, so don’t be in a hurry to get to the finish line. Take your time and soak in everything that’s happening all around you.

Here’s a few other things to know, too: You don’t have to be at the start of the race; you can jump in at any time. If this is your strategy, then be sure and be at Hayes Hill by 10 a.m….You don’t really need to register (tho the organizers are likely to say “hey PubClub don’t tell people that please!” We do encourage you to register, however and your bib goes get you into the Finish Line Festival…There are bars along the route between Hayes Hill and Golden Gate Park…Be sure your phone battery has enough of a charge left at the end so you can call Uber or Lyft to get back to the City…Heres’ the B2B website and registration form.
