Wrigley Field, Deep Dish Pizza, Navy Pier & A Great Bar After 2 A.M.
Chicago is one of America’s greatest cities.
Part of that is because it’s full of people from Chicago, and they are friendly, love to have a great time and love to hoist beers with visitors.
The other part is that there are things that are uniquely Chicagoan, and when you’re visiting you want to do them so you can have the complete Chicago experience. So here’s PubClub.com’s guide to where to go, what to do and where to drink for a perfect weekend in the Windy City.
1.) GO TO WRIGLEY FIELD
Chicago is a great sports town and even though the Blackhawks have won the Stanley Cup title again – for the third time in the past six years – nothing says Chicago like going to a Cubs game. Wrigley Field is, quite simply, the finest ballpark in America. It’s like stepping back into the 1920s. You’re so close to the action in some seats you can practically reach out and high-five the players.
Plus, there’s the atmosphere before and after the games in Wrigleyville.
So plan your weekend trip to Chicago for when the Cubbies are town. And make sure it’s for a day game.
2.) GO TO WRIGLEVILLE ON A CUBS DAY GAME
Murphy’s Bleachers before the game and the Cubby Bear afterward; from there just enjoy the spirit and the scene. Within the first hour of the first bar, you’ll fall in love with Chicago and Chicagoans.
3.) HAVE SOME DEEP-DISH PIZZA
Deep-dish pizza is as much a part of Chicago as the Cubs, the Sears Tower (now called the Willis Tower) and the wind off Lake Michigan. It’s pizza served in a pan with heaps of tomato paste and toppings. It makes for a great, hearty base for all that beer you’ll be drinking on the weekend.
These places are all over Chicago; PubClub.com like Rinaldi’s (2827 N. Broadway, Chiicago, IL), while Gino’s East is the orignal deep dish pizza (4 locations, including this one in the South Loop: 521 S. Dearborn, Chicago, IL).
4.) GO TO THE NAVY PIER
With all kinds of attractions – including a beer garden – Navy Pier is good place to spend a day.
Nearly nine million people a year go to this amusement park of a sorts on the lake. It has everything to keep you occupied for an afternoon.
There are restaurants, live music Wednesdays thru Sundays at the Land Shark Beer Garden from May-Sept., and all kind of events, such as fireworks on Wednedays (at 9:30) and Saturdays (10:15).
And it’s free!
5.) THE CLASSIC AMERICAN LAST-CALL BAR
The best bar in America after 2 a..m., is this spot at Rush & Division. It’s nothing more than a simple bar that looks kind of like a ski lodge, but it’s the company you keep here that makes it an all-time classic last-call bar.
This area used to be the most happening nightlife place in the city, but now you can find a lot of the action on and around HUbbard Street.
