Basketball Championship Returns To The Site Of Michael Jordan’s Game-Winning Shot

In 2022, for the first time since 2012, the NCAA Men’s Final Four will be held in New Orleans, The last game in the Big Easy was when Kentucky beat Kansas to win the title. The 2022 game will be the 40th anniversary of when true freshman Michael Jordan hit the game-winning shot to beat Georgetown 63-62.
That was significant because freshmen rarely played back then, let alone took game-winning shots. And at that moment everyone but apparently the Portland Trial Blazers knew that a star was born in the sport.
The 2022 game will be played at the Mercedes Benz Superdome for the sixth time.
Frankly, New Orleans should be the site of every championship in every major sport. It has everything organizers need: a ready-made city with an area that is walking distance from the hotels, restaurants and nightlife, a city familiar in dealing with big crowds and a rippin’ fun area for nightlife and entertainment.
“New Orleans has an incredibly rich history of hosting the Final Four and for a variety of reasons it was determined that 2022 was the perfect year to bring the event back to the Crescent City,” said Dan Gavitt, vice president for men’s basketball championships. “New Orleans is a festive place that embraces this event and makes it special for participating student athletes and fans.
“With a little luck, we’ll get some of the same Final Four magic we’ve been treated to in the past.”
The site for the 2017 Final Four is Phoenix. Here’s a list of future Final Four cities leding up to New Orleans:
