Bar and nightclub owner in New York City are celebrating the new cure – literally called CURE – for the city’s nightlife.
Eric Adams, the nightlife-friendly mayor, announced CURE (Coordinating a United Resolution with Establishments) that will have the Office of Nightlife to act as an intermediary with the bar and clubs. Previously, the city operated under something called MARCH (Multi-Agency Response to Community Hotspots) launched by Mayor Rudy Giuliani that gave authorities the power to “inspect” the businesses.
The problem, say nightclub owners, is that the authorities would come during peak hours on weekend nights, sometimes bringing the serving of alcohol to a halt and costing the bars thousands of dollars. Under the new provision, the Office of Nightlife will communicate with the business owners to try to resolve issues that stem from complaints. Surprise visits – nightclub owners called them raids – will only be used as a last resort. .
“They’d come to bust my balls on a Saturday night, looking for fruit flies on my bottles at 1 a.m. They never came at 10 p.m. on a Tuesday or Thursday,” restaurateur and nightlife veteran Stratis Morfogen told Side Dish.
“I had to stop serving bottles until they finished their inspection. It was very disruptive and unfortunately very personal. And that’s why I got out of the nightclub business.“
Mayor Adams goes out every night, which has led to some jokes about him, but nightclub owners say he is supporting local businesses. And with CURE, he’s out to cure some of the complaints about restricting New York City’s nightlife.
